Nature Calls

You’re in the OFFICE, you’re in a MEETING, you’re in your CAR, you’re PICKING up the kids from school, you’re SHOPPING, you’re on the BUS, and NATURE CALLS
You want to answer, you’re desperate!, but you have to wait until you get home, or find a toilet somewhere. A lot of people find it difficult to use other people’s toilets or public toilets. So the call of nature is usually held. When you eventually go the stools are dry, hard and difficult to pass. This can also be painful. One of the most common reasons your bowel goes on strike is because of lack of fibre, oil and water. “Does that ring a bell?” If you drive a car it should! The bowel needs these elements to drive you to the toilet – get it? In order to produce soft, smooth, painless stool oil, fibre and water all need to be in balance.

If you do no exercise then your constipation can be exacerbated.

Conditions such as,
Diabetes (when body develops a defect either with insulin production or insulin action on the blood sugar level.)
Depression (an altered state
Irritable bowel (causes sensitivity of intestinal nerves)
can contribute to constipation. Certain drugs/medication prescribed for these and other conditions may add to restricted bowel action.

When should you consult your GP
Although not pleasant, constipation is usually not grave, but be mindful that it can sometimes signal a serious condition such as colorectal cancer or just obstruction of the bowel. If it carries on for more than 2 weeks or more, and you notice excess mucus or blood in your stool, maybe there are signs of fever, severe abdominal pain or weight loss maybe alternating with diarrhoea, then please consult your medical DR.

Be aware that blood pressure drugs, diuretics, codine or morphine based painkillers, antidepressants, antiacids and certain drugs containing aluminium & calcium can cause constipation.

Important pointers:
• Get regular exercise, walk daily, add good fibre to your daily diet – soaked flax seeds are an excellent source of omega-3
• Do not ignore nature’s call, if you do you can start a back log resulting in severe constipation
• Never ever try to force a bowel movement. This could result in extremely painful haemorrhoids (piles) or anal fissures. These can narrow the passage of the anus. Straining on the toilet can also have a strong effect on the heart. This can have a very negative effect on your blood pressure and could even bring on a heart attack.

Last resort
Laxatives – be very aware of how dangerous it can be to take any product which has an over stimulating action on the bowel. Over the counter laxatives can be quite violent on the bowel. The herb Cascara Sagrada is milder than over the counter laxatives and is very effective. Do not take for longer than two weeks, after this you should consult your health care practitioner who should take the time to help you with your meal plans and an exercise programme. By over stimulating the bowel with any laxative you will loose vital minerals such as water, potassium and salt.
Note: Cascara Sagrada must not be used by children or pregnant women.

A teaspoon of Epsom salts in warm water can be taken at 6am in the morning followed by a large cup of hot lemon and water. This can be taken for 2 weeks max. Remember to use ONE teaspoon only – this treatment is very effective.
